Preserving our Natural Resources

Fortis IBA Ltd are leaders in the recycling and production of IBA (Incinerator Bottom Ash), creating a quality secondary aggregate for use within the construction industry.

The Fortis team has led the way in IBA processing and marketing for the last ten years.  During this time, we have recycled, processed and distributed over 1,000,000 tonnes of IBA Aggregate into the construction industry.  In doing so, we have played an integral part in diverting over 4,000,000 tonnes of waste from landfill.

IBA Aggregate is produced from energy recovery facilities from non-recyclable domestic and commercial waste which would have in the past been sent to landfill.  The process releases the energy potential in waste so that it can be utilised to generate electricity via combustion, this will deliver significant environmental, social and economic benefits to the community.

Benefits of using Fortis IBA Aggregate:

  • Helping to save our natural resources.
  • Diverting at least 95% residual municipal waste from landfill.
  • Generating electricity for the community.
  • Reducing carbon footprint by producing a valuable secondary aggregate locally.
  • Pozzolanic (cement-like) properties, enhancing its performance over primary aggregates.
  • Less tonnage needed per m3 vs. primary aggregates.
  • Avoiding the £2/tonne tax applied on primary aggregates.

IBA Aggregate is a sustainable and accepted alternative to Type 1, 6F4 and 6F5 capping and consists of fused clinker, ceramics, glass, stone and concrete.  It has been widely used in construction for over 20 years and has been approved by the Environment Agency, Highways England and local authorities with great success.  IBA Aggregate can be used in two major applications; when bound, it is ideal for road paving and construction blocks.

Fortis IBA Aggregate is processed and distributed in accordance with Environment Agency guidelines and recommendations.  As a fundamental part of our duty of care responsibilities, we carry out a comprehensive three tier risk assessment of every site and every contract prior to supplying IBA Aggregate.  This provides certainty and confidence for our clients as well as providing a reliable audit trail for all the IBA Aggregate we market.

Fortis’ efficient management of waste materials is a vital service to both the environment and the community and we pride ourselves on conducting sustainable services to exemplary standards whilst protecting and enhancing the environment.

Our approach to the management and the sustainability of our facilities is in accordance with our Environmental Permits and Policies.  These are aimed at protecting the environment and people by complying with all relevant legislation and regulation, preventing pollution, continually improving our environmental performance and engaging with local stakeholders and the community.
